Free weekly collection at your doorstep !

From 1 October 2016, Just-Breeze is managing the free collection service of your recyclable materials each week - on the same day as your refuse removal, on behalf of the City of Cape Town.

How to get started

To get onto the system, you’ll need a starter pack which contains recycling bags for getting going, along with an information leaflet and a fridge magnet reminder card. These tell you what’s recyclable and what’s not.

(There’s no need to separate different items into different bags – paper, plastics, glass and tins all go into the one clear bag.)

Once you put your bag of recyclables out for collection on refuse removal day, it will be exchanged for a fresh one each week - then you are on your way.

If you haven’t yet received a starter pack in your post box, pick up one at the nearest municipal offices in Fish Hoek. Bring your rates account with you for proof of residence. If you are renting, ask for one from the agent or owner.

Up to seven more jobs are created locally by recycling waste than by disposing it to landfill.

Simple steps to get sorted for recycling – it’s as easy as 1-2-3 !

Follow these simple steps to get into the recycling routine.

One: Save all your ‘dry’ recyclables (paper, bottles, tins, plastic containers) during the week in the clear plastic bag.
Two: On refuse removal day, place your clear bag of recyclables next to or on top of your wheelie-bin.
Three: The contractor Just Breeze will remove your recyclables bag and leave a new clear bag for you to start collecting your next week’s recyclables.

The energy saved from recycling one glass bottle will power a computer for 25 minutes.
- Glass Recycling Association

You can help by making sure to:

  • Prevent glass items from breaking
  • Remove lids and caps then squeeze plastic bottles and containers
  • Rinse out containers and bottles
  • Flatten big cardboard boxes and place beside the wheelie-bin.

Where do your recyclables go?

Your bag of recyclables is picked up and put into a separate truck. From there they go to a recycling depot for sorting and separating, and from there to reprocessing into new products again.

Non-recyclable and wet waste in your wheelie-bin goes into the refuse truck in the usual way before being disposed of at a landfill site.

A family of four which recycles generates about 40% less carbon dioxide greenhouse gas a year than a family that doesn’t. (US EPA)
